What are Epididymitis and Orchitis?

Epididymitis is inflammation of the epididymis, a coiled tube at the back of the testicle that stores and carries sperm. Orchitis is inflammation of the testicle itself. Often, these two conditions occur together (epididymo-orchitis).

Symptoms

  • Pain and swelling in one testicle.
  • Scrotum that is red, warm, and tender to the touch.
  • Painful urination or discharge from the penis.
  • Fever and general feeling of unwellness.

Diagnosis & Treatment

Prompt diagnosis is critical. It involves a physical examination, urine tests, and sometimes an ultrasound of the scrotum. Treatment includes a course of antibiotics, rest, and pain relievers.

FAQs

Q: Is testicular pain always a sign of an STD?

Not always, but in sexually active men, STIs like Chlamydia and Gonorrhea are a very common cause of epididymitis. It is crucial to get tested to rule out an STD.

Q: Is epididymitis a medical emergency?

Sudden, severe testicular pain should always be treated as a medical emergency to rule out testicular torsion, which requires immediate surgery. If pain is gradual, you should still see a doctor promptly.

Q: Can epididymitis cause infertility?

If left untreated, chronic or recurrent epididymitis can cause scarring that blocks sperm transport, potentially leading to infertility. This is why prompt treatment is so important.
