What is Trichomoniasis?
Trichomoniasis (often called "trich") is a very common sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by a protozoan parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis. While it is curable, millions of people are infected each year. Many people with trichomoniasis do not have any symptoms, but they can still spread the infection to others.
Symptoms of Trichomoniasis
Symptoms of trichomoniasis can vary, and many people, especially men, have no symptoms at all. When symptoms do occur, they usually appear within 5 to 28 days of being infected.
Symptoms in Women:
- A change in vaginal discharge (e.g., thin discharge or more discharge than usual).
- Discharge that is clear, white, yellowish, or greenish with an unusual fishy smell.
- Genital itching, burning, redness, or soreness.
- Discomfort with urination.
- Pain during sexual intercourse.
Symptoms in Men:
- Itching or irritation inside the penis.
- Burning after urination or ejaculation.
- Discharge from the penis.
Testing for Trichomoniasis in Nepal
At STD Nepal, we provide confidential and accurate testing. A diagnosis is typically made by taking a sample of vaginal fluid for women or a urine sample for men and examining it under a microscope for the parasite. We may also use more sensitive tests like nucleic acid amplification tests (NAAT).
Trichomoniasis Treatment
Trichomoniasis is easily cured with a single dose of a prescription antibiotic medication (usually Metronidazole or Tinidazole). It's important that both you and your sexual partner(s) are treated at the same time to prevent getting infected again.
You should not drink alcohol for 24 hours after taking Metronidazole or for 72 hours after taking Tinidazole, as it can cause severe nausea and vomiting.
Prevention
- Using condoms correctly every time you have sex can reduce the risk of getting or spreading trichomoniasis.
- Get tested regularly if you have new or multiple partners.
- Ensure all your sexual partners are treated to avoid reinfection.
