What is a Yeast Infection?
A yeast infection, or candidiasis, is a common fungal infection. It's caused by an overgrowth of the yeast Candida, which normally lives in the body (in places like the mouth, throat, gut, and vagina) without causing problems. When the balance of the environment changes, Candida can multiply and cause an infection.
Vaginal yeast infections are very common, but yeast infections can also affect men (penile candidiasis), as well as other parts of the body.
Symptoms
In Women (Vaginal Candidiasis):
- Intense itching and irritation of the vagina and vulva.
- A thick, white, odor-free discharge, often described as looking like cottage cheese.
- Burning sensation during urination or intercourse.
- Redness and swelling of the vulva.
In Men (Penile Candidiasis):
- Redness, itching, or a burning feeling on the head of the penis.
- A moist area on the penis, sometimes with a thick, white substance collecting in skin folds.
Yeast Infection Treatment in Nepal
Yeast infections are effectively treated with antifungal medications. The choice of treatment depends on the severity and frequency of infections.
- Topical Antifungals: Creams, ointments, or suppositories (like Clotrimazole or Miconazole) are used for mild to moderate infections.
- Oral Antifungals: A single dose of a pill like Fluconazole is often sufficient for uncomplicated infections.
For recurrent or complicated yeast infections, our doctors can provide a tailored management plan. While not typically considered an STI, it can be passed between sexual partners, so it's sometimes advisable for both partners to be treated.
